I love looking at what other people do. It gives me ideas. I thought some people might like to see some photos and video of what I have been doing.
My concerts are called Play the Deck and artists play from the deck of the pool. The pool is above ground and on a slope so the guests sit below on the grass and sometimes on the house side of the deck if the numbers are large.
I am an educator and so I ask artists if they will support a young person by allowing them to open for them with 2 or 3 songs and spend some time mentoring them. Every artist I have approached has agreed eagerly. I love their generosity.
We usually have outdoor shows at the Music Shack near Donnybrook WA – although we’ve plenty of room we’re limited to 100 maximum. We filled all places for Simon and Tammy London last Friday 10th March and the crowd were very happy with the great performance. We first heard Simon and Tammy at last year’s Fairbridge Music Festival and they did well there, attracting good crowds to their gigs.
Our crowd always turn up early for a picnic and chat with friends well before the show and Friday was no exception. The photo shows the early arrivals settling in. The night turned quite cold but we’re a bit used to it and everyone was prepared with rugs and jackets so it made no difference. Another glass of red helped some.
During the first set the six year old Sid did a spell on tambourine – he’s already a performer having busked at Fairbridge on his trumpet last year.
Photographing the evening scene with our tree spots changing colours and twinkling laser dots contrasting against the bright stage lights is a bit tricky so this hand held shot is the best I could manage on the night.
That’s it for this summer season – we’ve had our usual three summer gigs and we’ve packed everything away till next season. We usually have a winter indoor show but this year we’ll be in Europe for several months so that’s it until next year. That was our 27th concert, all run on the House Concert basis of performers take the gate less expenses – it’s all good fun.
We somehow squeezed 83 people in our lounge room for our tenth house concert last Saturday. The talent and professionalism of these artist was outstanding. The concert was a great success and we even had guest appearances from Liz Frencham and Greg Champion. A fabulous night!
