House Concerts are one of the most important trends in independent music today – and they’re popping up all over the world!
A house concert is a chance to experience music in a warm and intimate environment. It’s when someone opens up their home and invites you into their living room to share in a performance by one of their favourite musicians. There’s just something about house concerts. For musicians, the intimacy allows for a deeper connection to the audience, which often leads to strong merchandise sales and lifelong fans and for hosts, it’s a chance to meet the performers and get them to sign their CD. A house concert is also a great social evening of friends and neighbours. – Lisa Aston, original founder of HCA
Can you gather up 10, 20, 30 of your family/friends? Perhaps you have a big property and a large network, some of our hosts bring 80-100 guests! Whatever your situation, there will be an artist willing to perform for you! Enjoy a great social evening with family and friends and know that you are actively supporting our live music industry!
Guests contribute a donation on the night which goes to the performer. We recommend you agree on a per-person donation amount with your artist prior to the performance, these usually range from $15-$30 per person.
After registering, you can contact our artists or wait for them to contact you via your website profile. If you are interested in hosting them you can suggest and discuss possible dates with them.
Definitely! Feel free to contact us anytime and we will help guide you through every step of the way!
Sometimes situations occur and not all of your guests will arrive. Please discuss this scenario with the artist early in the planning stage. Some performers will require a minimum number of attendees, other performers are happy to play for anyone. This is entirely up to you and the artist to agree upon.
House concerts are just that, a concert! These artists are not providing “background” music and require a dedicated listening audience. If you want to turn your function into a house concert, then that is fine, as long as the guests are aware that they are expected to give their full attention to the performer during their show.
Although not required, we recommend either you or the performer have public liability insurance, just in case one of your guests trip over a power cable! Since a house concert is an invite-only, private event held in a domestic environment you do not need to worry about APRA performance licence fees, liquor licences or other requirements related to organising public concerts. If you choose to advertise your concert publicly (posters, artists website etc), please check your local law requirements and contact APRA.
You can do BYO, ask your guests to bring a small plate to share or you can provide food and drinks for your guests and artist, whatever you like! We think house concerts are always better when there is some food and drink involved 🙂
Many artists are travelling from out of town and may be on tour from overseas. Many hosts like to offer free accommodation as a way to further support the artist, and it gives you a chance to get to know them more! One of the great things about house concerts is the personal nature and the way they can bring people together through music.
It is a fair question and one we take very seriously. In our time running House Concerts Australia we have thankfully not encountered any issues of theft or criminal activity from any of our artists or hosts. We advise you to use discretion and only host artists who you feel comfortable with. Have some dialogue with them and check out their website and recent projects. If something doesn’t feel right, please let us know.
House concerts are just like any other private event you hold. It is important you do not advertise these publicly and operate on an invite only basis, this includes making sure the artist does not promote the event publicly on their website.
HCA has been around since 2009 and we have helped facilitate thousands of house concerts! We have just launched our new website in March 2017.
Our friend Fran Snyder, who runs the American based “ConcertsInYourHome.com” also has a great blog with helpful information for hosts! Here are a few links:
